A prohibition on self-service in brick-and-mortar and online retail for certain biocidal products used in household insecticides will be introduced in Germany on the 1st of January 2025.

This is due to Article 10 of the Regulation of Implementing the Biocide Law (ChemBiozidDV), which introduces new legal requirements for the sale of biocides. This means that biocides used for the control of insects

(e.g. ants, flies, silverfish, mosquitoes etc.) will no longer be available for self-service from 2025 onwards. Furthermore, they will be removed from the shelves of most supermarkets, chemists' and online shops. Unrestricted successor products are already available to retailers.

You will find suppliers at the end of the product descriptions.

Overview with images and links to the product pages

In accordance with the German legal requirements issued by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in the form of the Regulation of Implementing  the Biocide Law (ChemBiozidDV), a significant number of products utilising active ingredients for the control of household insects (including clothes moths, ants, silverfish, flies and mosquitoes) will no longer be sold without restriction in Germany from the 1st of January 2025 onwards.

Consequently, German retailers are obliged to store these products in a locked cabinet and ensure that they are sold only by duly qualified sales personnel employed by the company and only after a comprehensive consultation on the use and potential risks associated with the biocides in question has taken place. Online sales require video consultations that cover the same topics as in-store consultations.

The financial and organisational costs associated with the regulatory requirements are too high for most supermarkets, chemists' and online shops. In light of the aforementioned issues, the affected insect control products have been removed from many retail shelves and online shops over the course of 2024.

The new sale regulations are presented in Section 3 (Articles 9-13) of Regulation 404/21 (ChemBiozidDV).

Product information

Ant Bait Station*

The bait stations can be opened using a sharp object on the oval markings indicated. Do not apply the object (e.g. scissors) to the middle of the oval marking but directly on the raised, pre-punched line around the outside. It is easiest to push in the openings at this point.

The ant bait can consists of a metal can that securely encloses the bait containing the active ingredient. Contact with the bait is only possible through the two small openings or if the can is opened by force (biting through). In both cases, the amount of active ingredient contained is so low that there is no risk to pets.

Two bait doses are recommended if more than 30 ants are visible. Use a maximum of 2 bait doses per infestation at the same time. If necessary, repeat the application every 3 weeks during the seasonal activity of the ants - but not more than 11 applications per year. It takes some time for the ants to accept and consume the bait. Complete eradication of an infestation can take between one and three weeks.

Pushing down the two oval openings may cause the formula carrier to be pushed to the top edge of the tin. This does not affect the effectiveness of the ant bait station. Ants are very good at climbing so they can easily reach the pad soaked with the active substance at the top of the tin.

Barn & Stable Fly Catcher

The glue-free area in the middle and at the edges of the barn & stable fly catcher is technically designed and has been implemented to prevent unwanted glue leakage while the fly catcher is being stored.

The non-toxic glue on the Aeroxon® Fly Catcher is not water-soluble. However, the glue can be removed from feathers by carefully dissolving it with cooking oil (e.g. sunflower, rapeseed or olive oil). The oil should then be washed off the feathers using lukewarm water and a mild, moisturising shampoo (e.g. baby shampoo).

Bats are wild animals, so you should not touch the bat without wearing gloves.

Please contact a vet or a bat expert immediately.

Protect your rooms with fly screens for windows and doors to prevent bats from entering your living space.

Clothes Moth Killer Cassette*

Yes, that’s possible. You can also use only the hanger, where the active ingredient evaporates continuously for 6 months. The second hanger (consumption monitor and fragrance) does not contain any active ingredient. The pink-coloured scent solution provides the scent of fresh laundry in the wardrobe and evaporates within 6 months.

Clothes Moth Trap

If textiles are accidentally stuck to the glue surface of the clothes moth trap, the glue stains can be removed with a commercially available stain remover for resins and oils. Absorb the dissolved glue substances with a cloth. Repeat this procedure several times if necessary.  Please use these agents sparingly and in accordance with the instructions. Before treating the glue spots, we recommend checking the colour fastness on an inconspicuous area.

Fly Catcher

Better catch results can sometimes be achieved by changing the position of the Fly Catcher. Flies mainly use their eyesight to orientate themselves and are attracted to contrasts between light and dark, hence the attraction of the spiral-shaped sticking tape. However, it is possible that its attraction can be weakened by other environmental stimuli. Generally speaking, the Fly Catcher is a product that works over the longer term. It should not be expected to immediately kill all the flies in a room, such as when using an insecticide spray for example.

To prevent tearing the glued paper strip when pulling it out, the fly catcher should be at room temperature. Warm up the fly catcher in your hand before pulling it out very slowly with a gentle turning motion. The heat makes the glue more elastic and the fly catcher can be unrolled with greater ease.

In order to completely remove the glue, the following procedure has proven to be successful:

In the first step, please remove the sticky spots with vegetable oil such as sunflower oil. Then absorb the dissolved glue substances with a cloth. Repeat this procedure several times if necessary.

In the second step, remove the adhesive and oil residues from the hair. There are special oil and grease-specific cleaning agents available for this purpose - examples include lighter fuel including stain remover or white spirit. Please use these agents sparingly and in accordance with the instructions.

After removing the adhesive and oil residues from your hair, wash the treated area several times with shampoo.

Food Moth Trap*

If the white protective paper is very difficult to peel off, the glue was probably too warm when it was applied. A good way of making it easier to remove the protective paper is to store the traps in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.  The glue then becomes stronger and bonds less with the overlying protective paper. After you have fixed the trap in the cabinet, we recommend that you firmly run your fingers over the trap several times. Then hold the trap tightly with one hand and and remove the white protective paper with one quick movement.

Fruit Fly Trap*

Place the trap directly next to the fruit. The smell of a special vinegar mixture evaporates from the bottle and attracts the fruit flies. Overripe fruit should be disposed of early in the summer months to prevent the fruit flies from multiplying. A significant reduction in infestation occurs within 3 days.

Moth Killer Strips*

The best way to protect textiles made of animal fibres, such as wool, silk, cashmere or even furs, is to store them in closed boxes or clothes bags.

Simply insert a few sheets of Aeroxon Moth Killer Strips to reliably combat any moths or fur beetles as well as their larvae.

Motiv-Fliegenfalle Schmetterling

If the Window Fly Killer has been stuck to glass or has been exposed to direct sunlight for longer than 6 months, removing the sticker in one piece can be difficult. In these cases, please use a glass scraper for ceramic hobs to carefully detach the Window Fly Killer from the windowpane.

Mouse Trap

The piece of cheese may not have been fixed firmly enough onto the latch so that the mouse was able to lift it off easily. Our tip: dribble a little honey or chocolate spread on the latch and “stick” a piece of cheese or ham onto it.

Silverfish Bait Station*

The bait stations can be opened using a sharp object on the oval markings indicated. Do not apply the object (e.g. scissors) to the middle of the oval marking but directly on the raised, pre-punched line around the outside. It is easiest to push in the openings at this point.

The intake of dead silverfish does not pose a health risk to pets.

Since the active ingredient in the silverfish bait station has a low toxic potential for mammals, the contents (insecticidal bait) would have to be swallowed approx. 660 times in order to cause dangerous poisoning in a 3 kg animal (small cat).

The silverfish also absorbs very little of the active ingredient. A 3 kg pet would have to swallow about 2.5 million silverfish in a short amount of time in order to experience serious poisoning.

The silverfish bait can contains an active ingredient bait. The active ingredient is not released through indoor air and can be used wherever silverfish have been sighted. The product must be applied in such a way that it is placed near possible silverfish hiding places (walls). The product should be placed out of the reach of children and pets.

Window Fly Killer – Butterfly*

If the Window Fly Killer has been stuck to glass or has been exposed to direct sunlight for longer than 6 months, removing the sticker in one piece can be difficult. In these cases, please use a glass scraper for ceramic hobs to carefully detach the Window Fly Killer from the windowpane.

The ingestion of dead flies that have died through contact with the fly bait poses no danger to pets due to the small amount of active ingredient.

Window Fly Killer – Ladybird*

The ingestion of dead flies that have died through contact with the fly bait poses no danger to pets due to the small amount of active ingredient.

If the Window Fly Killer has been stuck to glass or has been exposed to direct sunlight for longer than 6 months, removing the sticker in one piece can be difficult. In these cases, please use a glass scraper for ceramic hobs to carefully detach the Window Fly Killer from the windowpane.

Window Fly Killer –Strips*

The ingestion of dead flies that have died through contact with the fly bait poses no danger to pets due to the small amount of active ingredient.

If the fly bait is stuck to the window frame for longer than 6 months or is exposed to direct sunlight, adhesive residue may remain on the window frame after removing the strip. These residues can be removed with a commercially available label remover (please follow the manufacturer's instructions).

Window Fly Trap Fruit Design

Inclined skylights are generally exposed to more intense sunlight, which can lead to high temperatures on the windowpanes, partially liquefying the glue on the trap. Small drops of glue can then form on the heated surface and may fall due to gravitational forces. In order to avoid the soiling of an attached roller blind or carpet positioned under the window, we advise against the use of the product on inclined skylights.
